Ha Long Bay, October, and an Unmeasured Course: The Global Gate Ha Long ESG++ Marathon 2026

At ward cultural houses across Quang Ninh, people hand each other a small slip of paper printed with a QR code. Scan it, fill in a name, and a running slot is yours. Registration closes when the bibs run out — no fixed deadline, no screening round, no qualifying mark to beat. I have spent hours sitting beside the piste just to watch one athlete bend down and retie a shoelace before entering the ring. That small detail usually tells more than the results board. This time, the smallest detail of a race sits on a slip of paper handed out by hand.

The Global Gate Ha Long ESG++ Marathon 2026 – Run for Net Zero is scheduled for 11 October 2026 at Vinhomes Global Gate Ha Long, Quang Ninh. The organiser is DHA Vietnam, working with the Quang Ninh Department of Culture and Sports on bib distribution. Three distances have been published: 3 km, 10 km and 21 km. The target is 15,000 participants, alongside a stated aim of setting a Vietnamese record for the largest number of athletes. The course follows the coastal road towards Ha Long Bay and is described as flat, wide, with few bends and controlled traffic. Associate Professor Dr Nguyen Tri, General Director of DHA Vietnam, is the only named individual. DHA Vietnam runs the Heritage Races system and has previously staged a race that earned World Athletics Label Road Race status.

Behind the release sits a very clear positioning package: a race tied to Vingroup's urban project of more than 6,200 hectares, to the ISO 37125 planning standard, to Vietnam's 2050 Net Zero pledge. Running shirts printed with Run for Net Zero. A music night, family games, fireworks. A weekend in Quang Ninh built into an event with good pictures and a green story.

Reading the distance list closely, I stop at a gap. The 42.195 km distance does not appear. The word Marathon sits in the title, while the competition slate stops at the half marathon. In Asian mass-running organisation, that usage has become a commercial convention rather than a statement about official distance. If someone reports a Ha Long marathon as though a 42 km race existed, readers will be misled at the one point they care about most: how far they will run.

Then there is the word record. The record referenced here is a record of headcount, not of time. A crowded race is an achievement of logistics, medical cover, bib distribution, traffic control and the coordination of thousands of people at once. It measures nobody's speed. Blending the two kinds of record blurs the value of both. Records are only shadows; people are the course. And a record that no body has stood up to ratify is still a claim, not a data point.

What catches my attention most is the story about the road surface. The organiser describes a flat, wide, low-bend course and from that suggests the possibility of personal bests. A flat course genuinely helps performance, and that needs no argument. But a performance is only recognised when the course has been measured and certified to AIMS or World Athletics standards. The release mentions no certification. There is no named course measurer, no information on timing systems, aid stations or cut-off points. With a target of 15,000 runners, those gaps matter far more than a medal.

One variable has been left out. The course follows the coastal spine of Ha Long Bay. Coastal promontory roads commonly place runners in sustained crosswinds and headwinds, which quietly take away seconds on every loop. The organiser sells the beauty of the bay and the idea of a fast course at the same time. Those two promises do not always travel together. I have stood on coastal roads when the wind turned and watched an entire field bow its head and endure.

The largest risk, though, is not the wind. It is the calendar. 11 October falls late in the Northwest Pacific storm season, and the Quang Ninh coast took severe damage in September 2026. An outdoor event gathering 15,000 people, right beside the sea, with no published weather contingency, is an operational gap at the highest level. The release speaks of an experienced expert team and a support system of maximum capability. Those lines sound fine at a press conference. They cannot replace a medical plan with numbers, a postponement procedure, a refund policy. Athletics and life share one thing: everyone has a finish line, but few run the right route.

At a deeper level, this is a destination-marketing product. The real resources sit in a property project of more than 6,200 hectares, in the developer's communications budget, in local-government backing for permits and road closures. That gives the race a solid organisational base, and at the same time ties its lifespan to one project's sales cycle. If the developer's priorities shift, the course cannot sustain itself on the entry fees of 15,000 people.

The ESG++ label is a real advantage in an increasingly crowded race calendar, and also a trap. Green commitments without third-party verification invite scrutiny quickly. I learned to listen from late-night phone calls, when athletes say what they dare not say in daylight. In those calls, nobody has ever asked about shirt colour. They ask about distance, about water stations, about parking, about whether they will catch the last bus home.

Fairness matters too: Ha Long Bay is a World Heritage site, and very few races in the world have a course that beautiful. That is the event's most durable asset, the thing advertising money cannot buy. DHA Vietnam has run a World Athletics-standard race, which means the technical capacity exists. The question is simply which race that capacity is used for, and when.

What I will track in the coming months is not the 15,000 target. I want to see whether the organiser publishes course measurement certification, whether there is a weather plan, whether a 42.195 km distance is added next season, and whether that record target gets independent ratification. When those answers appear, we will know whether this is a long-haul race or a communications campaign with a start line and no finish line.
