Over the past decade and more, Vietnamese billiards has transformed from a recreational pastime in clubs into one of the strongest three-cushion carom centres in the world. Many Vietnamese cueists now sit in the leading group of the international rankings, and major tournaments have been staged on home soil. That achievement comes from a sustained accumulation of people, infrastructure and tournament organisation.
The foundation of this strength lies in table culture. Unlike many countries where snooker or pool dominates, Vietnam is strongest in three-cushion carom, also known as artistic billiards. A carom table needs no pockets, costs less to install and is easy to replicate, which has produced a club network stretching across provinces and cities.
Popularity is the necessary condition; the sufficient one is coaching quality. In major centres such as Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Hanoi and Da Nang, young players train in a professionalised environment with opponents of the same level and regular tournaments to sharpen their game. Constant competition hones cue-ball control and composure in decisive runs.
The turning point was Bao Phuong Vinh's world three-cushion title in Ankara, Turkey, in 2026. It was the first time a Vietnamese player took the sport's most prestigious crown, and the final was an all-Vietnamese clash with Tran Quyet Chien. The event proved that Vietnam can produce world-class champions.
Tran Quyet Chien, a multiple-time world number one, remains the pillar of Vietnamese billiards. He owns several World Cup titles on the UMB circuit and is a regular in the closing rounds of international events. That shows the technical base of Vietnamese billiards has matured.
In 2026 Vietnam hosted the UMB World Three-Cushion Championship in Binh Duong for the first time. Playing at home, Tran Quyet Chien won the first world title of his career. Hosting the sport's top event showed that organisational capacity and domestic audience interest are now sufficient.
The domestic tournament system has also thickened. Besides World Cup stages previously held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam has open events drawing large international fields, alongside national and youth circuits. A continuous calendar keeps professionals sharp and gives youngsters exposure.
Vietnam's strength no longer rests on a few individuals. Alongside Tran Quyet Chien and Bao Phuong Vinh, names such as Nguyen Quoc Nguyen, Nguyen Tran Thanh Tu, Pham Hoai Nam and Luong Thien Tung have established themselves internationally. In pool, Duong Quoc Hoang is a leading figure.
Notably, a wave of Vietnamese players has moved to professional competition in South Korea, home to the PBA tour with attractive prize structures. Those events bring extra income and experience under television pressure. In return, the dense calendar raises questions of stamina and balance between tours.
The economics of a cueist's career therefore deserve attention. At the top, income comes from prize money, personal sponsorship and brand promotion. But most players behind them still rely on coaching, club management or amateur events.
The income gap between the elite and the rest is a major barrier. Many talented youngsters dare not pursue a long professional path without sufficient financial resources. Federations and sponsors must solve this if the talent pool is to widen.
The biggest challenge for Vietnamese billiards is not technical but governance. Issues such as betting, match-fixing and standardising the tournament system still need fundamental solutions. Because billiards is closely tied to wagering, prevention must rank alongside performance development.
Looking ahead, Vietnamese billiards has a chance to widen its standing. Hosting more international events, investing systematically in youth and building a domestic professional tour would sustain momentum. The goal is not isolated titles but a durable place among the world's leading nations.
Vietnam's journey from alley-side tables to the world championship stage is a story of persistence. Its leading cueists have shown that Vietnamese players can stand alongside the biggest names in world carom. What remains is to turn individual success into a systemic foundation for the next generation.
